Cooling Shelters Available for At-Risk Residents

PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. – July 6, 2010 – As temperatures continue to climb this week – with heat indices by Wednesday, July 7, expected to reach up to 105 degrees – Calvert County residents are urged to take the following precautions to protect themselves and their families:

- Drink plenty of fluids; water is best.
- Avoid beverages containing alcohol, caffeine or large amounts of sugar as they can dehydrate the body.
- Stay in an air-conditioned room or building during the hottest part of the day. Read More

HEALTH DEPARTMENT RECOMMENDS ACTIONS
IN CASE OF HEAT EMERGENCY

LEONARDTOWN, MD.  (June 30, 2010) – According to the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH), the recent heat wave has contributed to five Maryland deaths in the past week.  All victims were senior citizens (65 and over) with underlying conditions and, with the exception of one resident, were found indoors without air conditioning.

“These deaths remind us how important it is to take precautions against harsh weather conditions such as the heat wave we are currently experiencing in our state,” said Governor Martin O’Malley.  “We need to be mindful of our families, friends and neighbors and take the time to check on those who may need extra assistance.” Read More

Quarterly Test of the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant
Emergency Siren System on July 6

The St. Mary’s County Department of Public Safety will conduct a full cycle test of the alert and warning sirens throughout southern Calvert and St. Mary’s County on Tuesday July 6 at noon. Seventeen of those sirens are in St. Mary’s County. The siren test will consist of a full three minute activation.  All citizens are asked to remember the scheduled testing and relay the information to friends, family and neighbors. Read More
